Who we are

Plain Home Costs is written by an independent editorial team. We aren't contractors or engineers, and we don't do building work. Our goal is to help you understand the numbers behind a home project, so you can plan it and check a quote.

How we work

Every calculator shows its formula and a worked example. Guides link to the building code section, federal rule or manufacturer document behind each figure. Where a number is only a rule of thumb or planning allowance, we say so.

Read the full process in our editorial standards, and see how we make money.

Reviewers

We don't list outside reviewers yet. If a licensed professional reviews a guide in the future, their name, license and the date of review will appear on that guide.

Spotted a mistake?

Tell us through our contact page. We check every report against the source and correct the guide, and the "Updated" date shows when it changed.
