Independent guide. Not a contractor, and we don't sell leads.
How we make money

About us

Who runs Plain Home Costs, why we built it, how our calculators and guides are checked, and how we stay independent of contractors.

Plain Home Costs helps homeowners work out what a project needs before they call a contractor. We start with the measurements every estimate depends on, so you can plan a job and check a quote:

  • Roofing: pitch, rafter length, roof area, shingles, metal panels and attic ventilation.
  • Concrete and block: cubic yards, bags, slabs, footings, columns, fence posts and block walls.
  • Interior: paint, flooring, tile, drywall, window openings and bathrooms.
  • Outdoor: stairs, decks, fences, gutters, gravel, mulch and soil.
  • Energy and comfort: room air conditioners, water heaters and attic insulation.

Why we built it

Many home cost pages give one broad price range without showing where it came from. We'd rather show the math, link the source, and let you change the assumptions to match your project.

Why you won't see prices yet

Real prices depend on your region, materials and contractor. We won't publish a cost range until we can back it up with sources and real quotes, and we'll show what it's based on.

We are independent

We're not contractors or a lead service. We don't do building work, and we don't sell your details to contractors. Nothing on this site is engineering or professional advice.

How we pay for the site

We plan to show clearly labeled ads. We don't currently use affiliate links. See how we make money. Advertisers never decide what we write.
